Steps to Becoming a SYC Member
General Considerations: Membership in the Seafarers Yacht Club (SYC) is open to individuals aged twenty-one (21) and above who demonstrate an interest in yachting, seamanship, and related social activities. Applicants are required to be of good moral character and must be recommended by a current active SYC member for consideration. Boat ownership, although is not a prerequisite for certain membership categories, is strongly encouraged. Applicants are required to submit a complete membership application along with the initiation fee and any necessary supporting documentation. Eligible individuals must agree to adhere to the SYC Constitution, Club, and House Rules. Also, to qualify for membership new members must be a family member or known by an active SYC member in good standing.
First Step: As a prospective member, you are encouraged to visit the club and meet the members at an event. By attending events and conversing with its members, prospective members will learn whether the club is the right opportunity for them, and members will learn whether the prospective member is a good addition to the club. A key part of the application process is to secure two sponsors, of which should be SYC captains. Also, you should have good rapport with your sponsors, and they should be willing to serve as your mentor throughout the application process and beyond.
Second Step: Receive the SYC membership application from the membership chair and fully complete it. You will also need two (2) personal references, of which should preferably be SYC members or members of another yacht club of which you are/were a member.
Third Step: Submit your application to the membership chair and pay the initiation fee to SYC treasurer.
Fourth Step: Your application will be reviewed by the membership chair. If it is completed with the required initiation fee, a ballot will be submitted to the SYC Executive Board for approval.
Fifth Step: Upon the executive board’s approval, a ballot is submitted to the general SYC membership for approval.
Final Step: Once the voting process is completed, the membership chair will reach out to you to inform you of the decision. If approved, you will be welcomed to the club, and at the next general membership meeting, presented with your welcome package and membership certificate. If not approved, you are allowed to re-apply for membership a minimum of six (6) months from the date of your initial membership application.
