 ANNUAL REPORT

January 14, 2012

Good afternoon.  As we are here to celebrate the beginning of another New Year and a New Decade, I would like to begin by wishing you and your family a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year.  The year 2011 marked the 52nd year of continuing operations for the Seafarers Yacht Club and was filled with numerous accomplishments that we can
all be proud.

Since its founding in 1959, the members of the Seafarers Yacht Club have enjoyed and shared a love of cruising the Chesapeake Bay and beyond.  In 2011, that legacy continued as our Fleet Captain Heyward Burrell did the usual fantastic job of putting together a schedule that was both exciting and reflective of economic times.  The Planning Committee, which is composed of members of the Seafarers Yacht Club and the Seafarers Yacht Club Auxiliary, again did an exemplary job in planning and implementing activities for the entire year.

I list below a sampling of 2011 highlights.

  • January - A Holiday Party sponsored by the Auxiliary
  • March - The 8th Annual Mardi Gras at Martin’s Crosswinds in Greenbelt, Maryland
  • May - Worship Service at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church
  • May - Flag Raising Ceremony to connote the beginning of the boating season
  • June - Cruise to Rock Hall Landing Marina
  • July - Summer Youth Program for at-risk youth of Anne Arundel and Prince George’s Counties
  • July - Rendezvous at Mears Point Marina with the Neptune, deBoaters, Pleasant, and Fort Washington Yacht Clubs, and the Universal Sailing Club
  • July - Annual Luau sponsored by the Auxiliary
  • August – Cruise to Herrington Harbor Marina South
  • October - Open House for members of Black Boaters Summit attending Annapolis Sail Boat Show
  • November - 70’s Disco Ball at Holy Family Catholic Church
  • November - Thanksgiving Dinner for Senior Citizens
  • December - Election of Club Officers for 2010

Other Events of Special Note

  • The sun deck out back was replaced with an altered floor plan that brought the deck floor boards level with the side door exit thus eliminating an inconvenient step-down onto the deck.  In addition, the steps leading down to the pool area were relocated, now directly facing the pool.  Overall, the installers did an excellent job that now complements the pool fence replaced last summer.  Both are tremendous improvements that will attract the attention of potential members and renters.

  • The audio-video system installed last summer was well utilized as the Club hosted a series of football parties, and provided ample music during activities for our members and guests.

  •  Captain Curtis Morris and his wife, Auxiliary President Tanya Morris, continue to make structural, electrical and mechanical repairs to the Clubhouse as needed.  Captain Morris recently installed a new sump pump in the cellar that now provides dry storage space for decorations and supplies.  We owe them a continuous vote of thanks for their efforts in maintaining the integrity of the Clubhouse and grounds.

  • Captain William (Buddy) Savin of Philadelphia again sponsored an Annual Christmas Party in Philadelphia for fellow seaman, colleagues and friends.  Last year was to be the last year but lucky for the Seafarers who attend each year, Capt. Savin had a change of mind.

Once again, we salute Tanya Morris and the Auxiliary for their outstanding support of the Club and Foundation.  “In every triumph there’s a lot of try” and, in this case, a lot of love and devotion to the Seafarers’ mission.

Finally, I thank the Board, officers, the general membership, and the Auxiliary for helping to advance the cause of the Seafarers.  Thus I recall the last sentence of every meeting notice from our Corresponding Secretary Captain Joseph Carpenter, “as a chain is no stronger than its links, our Club is no stronger than its members”.  The Foundation is also to be thanked for sponsoring the Summer Youth Program, Thanksgiving Dinner for Senior Citizens, and for an awesome New Year’s Eve Party and Fund Raiser.

I look forward to working with each of you to make 2012 a truly remarkable and eventful year.

Respectfully,

Melville Q. Wyche, Jr., MD
