SEAFARERS YACHT CLUB FOUNDATION INC. GALA

This year marks the 50th year of continuous operations of the Seafarers Yacht Club, Inc. In recognition of this historic occasion, we invite you to join the Seafarers Yacht Club Foundation, Inc. in honoring the Seafarers Yacht Club, Inc. at a "Gala in Celebration of 50 Years of Continuous Operations", on Saturday, September 19, 2009, 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. at Martins Crosswinds, 7400 Greenway Center Drive, Greenbelt, Maryland.

The Seafarers Yacht Club Foundation, Inc. was organized exclusively for charitable, scientific, and educational purposes, more specifically to provide educational opportunities for children, senior citizens and others in the community with specific needs relating to healthcare, finance, parenting and other day-to-day activities that, if properly addressed, can improve their quality of life. The African proverb "It Takes a Village to Raise a Child" is as true today as it was hundreds of years ago. Unfortunately in these "lean and mean" times communities are not what they used to be.  Life is a lot easier when you are part of a network of family and friends, a community, a neighborhood.  "Community, like charity, begins at home.  You start building a good neighborhood when you decide to become a good neighbor."  It is in the spirit of community that this Foundation was formed to support programs involving our children, the elderly and others with special needs.

Always aware of community, from its inception, the Seafarers Yacht Club has provided swimming lessons for neighborhood children, providing classes in boating safety along with practical experiences on the water.  In 2003, a formal one-week Summer Youth Program was established for children between the ages of 8 and 12 years from Anne Arundel and Prince George's Counties.  The program is designed to provide instructions and practical experiences in first aid and life saving measures, water safety, swimming, fishing, boating, the science of navigation, meteorology, math and reading, etiquette, information on career opportunities in the marine environment, and other matters pertaining to everyday life.  This program has been an overwhelming success, developing curiosity, capability, confidence and character, while promoting an appreciation of the marine environment.

We look forward to your participation and support in this Seafarers' 50th Anniversary Celebration.  View sponsorship information. Proceeds from the Gala will be utilized to support the Summer Youth Program, provide healthcare, and coordinate educational services for seniors and others in the community with special needs.
