SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM
Monday, July 7, to Friday, July 11, 2008,
8:30 am to 4:00 pm
The Seafarers Yacht Club, Inc. of Annapolis will sponsor a Summer Youth Program at the Seafarers Yacht Clubhouse, located at 602 Third Street, in Annapolis, Maryland.
Challenge: The Seafarers Summer Youth Program is a one-week program designed to provide at risk children between the ages of 8 and 12 with the basic skills necessary for safety and recreation, as well as career opportunities related to the waterways. The program’s goal will be to provide instructions in swimming, fishing, recreational boating, the science of navigation, information on career opportunities, as well as basic mathematics, reading and interpersonal relationship skills.
Solution: Children from Anne Arundel and Prince George’s Counties will be identified to participate in this program. It is our belief that children can master any subject when they are exposed at an early age. Thus, by giving these children the opportunity to participate in this Summer Youth Program, they will develop an awareness and interest that would otherwise not be attained.
History: Over the years, members of the Seafarers Yacht Club and Auxiliary have been towers of strength and strong forces for progressive, effective and efficient public service. Many of them have devoted themselves to a host of humanitarian causes. Their activities have been so extensive; it would seem one lifetime could not encompass them all. Yet they have found the time and energy to serve, to work, and lead, shouldering countless burdens with unfailing good humor and grace. Some of these activities have brought them richly deserved honors. In keeping with the spirit of community service, the Seafarers have pledged to devote the resources, and the time necessary to introduce, enlighten, educate, and motivate at risk children in pursuit of safety in the water and on the waterways, as well as career opportunities associated with marine life and the waterways.
